New Mexico State University will become the first and only university in the nation to offer housing specifically designated for student veterans and their families transitioning out of the military and into student life.

The program is the first in the country catering to families.

"What we found is that people didn't know where to go and they were having a tough time leaving the base with family housing and now their out on their own," said Andrea Sandoval, vice president of the Student Veterans' Association of NMSU.

The student organization partnered with the university's housing department to make several housing units available on the southwest side of campus.

"Our veterans have done their part for us and this was an easy way for us to do something for them so that they can come back go to school and reintegrate into civilian life as easily as possible," said Julie Weber, director of housing and student life at NMSU.

The housing will be provided to student veterans attending the university full-time.

Average cost of a unit will be about $630 a month and includes all utilities and cable.

Eight total units are available and three applications have already been filed.

The first groups are expected to move in at the beginning of February.
