NMSU was reaching out to families in the community. On Saturday, it offered free developmental screenings for children.

Students screened kids up to five years old.

They identified any potential delays in five developmental areas, which include cognitive, motor, language/communication, social/emotional and adaptive behaviors.

"We want to find out is there any children at risk for mental delays so we can refer them to someone for more evaluation,” said Assistant Professor Zhen Chai. “If we catch early, we can provide service early and then later on, the child may catch up."

The students also told parents how they can interact with their child at home to address the area of concern.

This is the first time NMSU offers screenings, but they hope to do it every semester from now on.
