The final details are diligently being taken care of inside the three-story Center for the Arts at New Mexico State University as it's grand opening is set for Friday.

Construction for the center began October 2010 and was completed by December of last year.

"This is a community building," said Josh Chenard, head of theatre at NMSU and an associate professor. "It is on our property and it is on NMSU, but we built it for the community we want people to come here."

The 59,000 square foot building has been open to the public.

The facility features a 466 seat theater with state of the art equipment.

The building will also serve as classrooms for the theatre and dance departments and art history as well.

"I think people come down here not really realizing there is a theatre department but now that we have this big gorgeous building people are going to pay more attention to us hopefully," said Clair Koleske, a junior theatre and English major.

The official grand opening will be Friday, February 22nd, when NMSU students and the American Southwest Theatre Company perform in the building for the first time.

The groups will be performing Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" throughout the weekend.
