Man arrested was planning mass shooting at NMSU

LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) — UPDATE: 4:20 P.M. Thursday: Las Cruces Police have 53-year-old Giuseppe Chiappara in custody, after he allegedly told a friend he was planning a mass shooting on the New Mexico State University campus.
Las Cruces police tell NewsChannel 9 Chiappara told a friend he was not only going to shoot an acquaintance, but also people at random on campus and any officer who would try to stop him.
Officers pulled him over in Las Cruces Wednesday night. He now faces a long list of charges including carrying a deadly weapon, possession of paraphernalia, and concealing his identity.
The New Mexico State University Campus is on alert tonight as campus police look for a man threatening to shoot someone on campus.
An alert went out to students and staff at around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.
NMSU police say the department received a third-party report that Giuseppe Chiappara, 53, was threatening to shoot someone.
Chiappara may be driving a white van on the east end of campus near the Pan American Center.
The University says for students to continue business as usual.
