NMSP: School talk helps thwart attacks in schools
TORRANCE COUNTY, N.M. — New Mexico State Police are crediting their awareness efforts with the discovery of a BB gun pistol.
Wednesday, the principal of Estancia Valley Classic Academy Charter School in Torrance County approached an NMSP officer, after a student reported seeing a classmate with a gun.
After further investigation, they found out a male student brought a black BB gun pistol with an orange tip.
They found the child had no criminal intent, and the child was taken home by his parent.
NMSP credits the officer, Jesse Mendoza, after he gave a talk the week before to students to be the "eyes and ears" of the police department, with helping to raise awareness from within the student population, and the positive impact partnering with local schools can have.
