SILVER CITY, NM - Low temperatures and low humidity are considered essential this morning in the firefighting effort near Silver City, NM.

The grass fire that started burning yesterday spread quickly due to high winds.  The fire has destroyed 1,700 acres and a dozen buildings.

Early this morning FEMA approved a grant to help pay for 75% of the cost to fight and contain the fast moving blaze.

Dozens of people have been evacuated from the area.

Investigators believe the fire is human caused.
