Newschannel 9 Digs Deeper into Los Paisanos Bus Crash

December 30, 2008 - 5:34pm

It was a gruesome scene, late Friday night when a Los Paisanos bus crashed on US-54 near Corona, New Mexico.

The crash killed 2 women and injured many others. While Newschannel 9 continues to ask questions about what led to the crash our team dug up some information on the company that operated the bus.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) Los Paisanos was out of compliance with safety requirements during inspections back in August.

Among the violations noted by inspectors:

-A driver allowed to drive "before" being cleared by pre employment testing.

The company currently has a "conditional" rating with the agency. They've been given 45 days to fix the problems and according to a spokesperson for the agency the follow-up inspections have not been conducted yet.

We also found on the FMCSA's website many drivers for the bus company have received more than 30 speeding tickets and some of those violations were repeat offenders.

Just before news time an appointed spokesperson for Los Paisanos bus company, Luis Sarinana agreed to an on-camera interview.

"Our condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives," Sarinana said.

He went on to say, this crash is an isolated case and bad weather was the cause.

But the lawyer of one family who was involved in the crash claims the driver should have taken a different route in the snowy weather.

"Its pretty much a normal route for the bus driver to go through that route unfortunately there was icy roads and he lost control and rolled over," Sarinana said.

Sarinana says the company's owner is aware of the speeding problems and is trying to fix them by implementing in-house prevention programs.

"Mr. Uriel has made it clear that if they don't obey the laws, there's no place for them in Los Paisanos, Sarinana said.

There is no new information coming out concerning the crash investigation, but we're on top of it and will bring you new information as we get it.
