Newly Elected Dona Ana County District Attorney ready to get to work
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — In what was a tight race for Dona Ana County district attorney, challenger Mark D'Antonio beat out incumbent Amy Orlando Tuesday night.
Throughout the night D'Antonio held a slim margin that kept growing giving the former FBI agent the victory with 52.9% of the vote.
"I'm humbled by the voters of Dona Ana County that they would trust me with such an important position," D'Antonio said after seeing the final numbers.
D'Antonio is the first elected district attorney since Susana Martinez held that title before becoming governor.
Current District Attorney Amy Orlando was appointed by Martinez when two years ago.
D'Antonio said he is ready to get to work and has the right tools for the job.
"I was an FBI investigator and know how to investigate complicated cases," D'Antonio said of his experience.
He was also a prosecutor in the county for about 10 years.
Most recently he has worked as a defense attorney. He plans on translating that experience to help build stronger cases.
"I'm going to use that experience to see all side of issues," he said.
He pledged to prosecute each case to the fullest extent of the law while being just to all.
"My family lives here, my son, my mother, my fiancé live here live in this city and I'm going to do my best to make it safe," D'Antonio said.
