El Paso, TEXAS (KTSM) — Newborn Mason Jayce Rodriguez is less than two months old, but has already had to fight for his life.
Just after his birth ,doctors noticed his abnormally sized stomach and placed him in intensive care.
"They told us that he had a mass," said Mason's mother Karyssa Garcia.
A biopsy showed something extremely uncommon. Mason was the only newborn in the world with an inflammatory Myofibroblastic tumor.
"Shocked. From all the reports the doctors have seen, he's the smallest to be diagnosed with this type of tumor," said Garcia.
Mason has been at the Children's Hospital in El Paso ever since with his mother by his side.
"To keep him happy. That's why I'm here most of the day. Nobody's met him yet. Everybody's just seen pictures," said Garcia.
Doctors are giving him chemotherapy and experimental medicine to reduce the size of the tumor in the hopes of operating.
"Sometimes he has good days and sometimes he has bad days," said Garcia.
His story is so rare, it has touched many in the community. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is hosting a fundraiser to help the family with costs.
"You know if he has to go out of town if he has any medical procedures," said Mason's uncle Eddie Avila. It's such an honor to have met so many good people."
"It's been a blessing just to have everybody participate and show interest in Mason's case," said Avila.
The Three Legged Monkey is hosting a brisket taco plate meal through August 8th. If you'd like to buy tickets you can stop by the El Paso County Sheriff’s office headquarters:
