Firefighters say a newborn girl found outside a West El Paso fire station appears to be healthy.

Around 8:30 Sunday evening, firefighters at Station 22 on the 6500 Block of Mesa heard the doorbell ring.

On the doorstep they found an infant girl wrapped in blankets, but no one else was with her.

She's been taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

According to Texas' Safe Haven Law, newborns under certain age limits can be abandoned at locations deemed safe, such as some fire stations.

The child will now be placed in protective custody.
