New Sunland Park Mayor Makes Changes on First Day
SUNLAND PARK, NM — Monday was the newly appointed Sunland Park Mayor Javier Perea's first full day in office.
Day one consisted of having to fire 12 people to help balance the budget which council agreed on last week. The 12 positions were mostly temporary and maintenance employees.
Perea said he hoped residents understand these cuts were necessary to help the city progress.
He also said one of his priorities was gaining the community's trust.
"The biggest thing we have to focus on is transparency in our government," Perea said. "We need to reestablish the lines of communication with the elected officials, the administration here and the people the residents of Sunland Park."
Perea said he was aware of the needs in different neighborhoods and hopes council can begin serving those needs instead of dealing with scandals.
