New strain of Bird Flu hits China, poultry markets in city now closed
(CNN) — Chinese authorities have killed birds at a poultry market in Shanghai, as a new strain of bird flu spreads. At least 14 cases have been reported so far - and six people have died from the virus.
All of them have been in eastern China. Officials in Shanghai say they will close all live poultry markets in the city.
Meanwhile, a Japanese research institute will receive virus samples of the latest bird flu strain from the Chinese government this month to create a vaccine.
The National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo is already analyzing genetic information from the virus to quickly make vaccines in case it spreads from person to person.
The institute plans to culture the samples from 3 patients and choose viruses suitable for the manufacture of vaccines.
It will also examine if anti-viral drugs for other bird flu strains are effective against the new strain.
China has so far confirmed 14 people who have been infected with the new bird flu virus in the eastern region including Shanghai and Jiangsu province. Six of them have confirmed dead.
