EL PASO (KTSM) — By now, drivers know to expect road closures and detours near Country Club Road.
This $14 million project broke ground in August of 2013. Starting Monday, westbound Country Club Road from Love Road to Montoya will be closed through November.
“This is a project that not only will allow us to deliver a new street, new sidewalk, new bicycle amenities, new roundabouts but it will also allow the utilities in the area to be replaced. Many of those utilities have been in the ground decades longer than they are useful,” said Martin Bartlett, public affairs coordinator with the City’s engineering and construction management department.
Businesses and residents have been dealing with the construction for a year now, and say it’s been a hassle.
Gabriel Pardo lives on Country Club Road and works at the intersection of Mesa and Doniphan. Getting to work used to be a simple task, but has become more complicated since the construction.
“All I had to do was pretty much leave my neighborhood and just go all the way down Country Club down to Mesa and come right here,” Pardo said. But now he said he does down to Artcraft Road.
“It’s just a nuisance having to going in a square,” Pardo said.
Coronado Cleaners sits at the start of the construction on Mesa and Doniphan. David Mizener, general manager said the construction has affected their business and the other shops in that plaza..
The barrels are there and it’s in front of the property that's there. A lot of the people that I’ve talked to down there said their businesses are down 10 to 15 percent because it’s very difficult to get in to the property,” Mizener said.
Businesses also say cars slamming on their brakes and knocked over barrels are a common sight.
According to the City, change is on the way soon.
“Coming in the next couple of weeks we're going to reopen Country Club between Love Road and Doniphan” Bartlett said.
“That should be a clear marker for folks that this project is progressing. We’re moving along. We’re actually going to be able to deliver something that folks can drive on and enjoy.”
