Parking downtown just got a bit "smarter."

El Pasoans will be seeing new "smart" parking meters in the downtown area as early as May.

Today, city leaders approved the new meters which will accept credit cards, smart cards, coins and even payment through a smart-phone app.

Right now, downtown El Paso has around 2,000 mechanical meters, but most of those in the government and hospital areas will be converted next year.

Really and lets see the amount of people who actually have credit cards or smartphones downtown that will utilize these functions.

I wonder if the cost to install the network and the physical hardware of the meters, will be less than the profit this will yield in 10yrs. If they were smart they would of used ones with cheap LCD screens that could display advertising to help cover the cost and earn revenue but again we live in EP that is "6th" in digital cities.
