New parking lot at El Paso Airport promises convenience, visitors like idea
Lot expected to ease terminal traffic
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Travelers returning after the Labor Day holiday packed terminals at El Paso International Airport Monday as they dropped off and picked up passengers.
The new free cell phone waiting lot is now open at the airport to alleviate some of that traffic.
Elizabeth Bellegarde, spokesperson for El Paso International Airport, said the 30-space parking lot was built for the convenience of drivers picking up arriving passengers.
"You can wait and save some fuel not going around the terminal circle and at the same time just wait for that call for your guest," she said.
The concept is popular in many major cities, and airport officials hope the concept will catch on in El Paso.
"The reason that it's called a cell phone parking lot is that you can wait in your car until your guest arrives at the airport, as soon as they pick up their bags and walk out to the curb, they can just give you a call on their cell phone and tell you. 'I'm ready to be picked up'" said Bellegarde.
There weren't very many drivers using the lot Monday, but Bellegarde hopes that will change once more people find out about it.
"I've used it in DC, Dallas airport, they have one, Kansas City airport, they have one. I use it everywhere they have one I use it," said one woman who said she picks up passengers at El Paso International at least once a month.
To get to the cell phone waiting lot, drivers take Airway toward the airport, past Boeing Dr. and turn right on Piper St., right past the Radisson Hotel.
