New Mexico National Guard troops were among those who came under attack in Egypt's Sinai peninsula Friday.

The 1st Battalion, 200th Infantry has a company based out of Las Cruces.

Gov. Susana Martinez, in a statement released to the media, said armed protestors attacked the Multinational Force and Observers Headquarters, where the troops are stationed.

We're told no U.S. troops were hurt.

This comes on the heels of several anti-American protests that have now spread to more than a dozen countries in the Middle East and beyond, fueled by a movie trailer that's enraged Muslims.

"Our prayers are with our New Mexico soldiers in Egypt and their families, as well as with all other military personnel who are protecting our freedom throughout the world," said Martinez.

"Appropriate force protection measures have been initiated by the command.  We will continue to monitor the situation in northern Egypt and will communicate with the families of our Soldiers about further developments as they become available to us," she said.

The Multinational Force and Observers' mission is to oversee the arrangements for securing the Sinai as agreed to by Israel and Egypt in their 1979 peace treaty, according to Martinez.
