New Mexico insurance regulator orders equal insurance treatment for same sex couples
El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — New Mexico's insurance regulator is ordering insurers provide benefits to same sex married couples.
Insurance Superintendent John Franchini says couples with valid marriage licenses must be treated equally and without discrimination by insurers. The directive comes as the state's Supreme Court considers whether to legalize same sex marriage.
Eight counties have already begun issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.
