New Mexico eliminates conjugal visits for inmates
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Conjugal visits will soon be a thing of the past in New Mexico. The New Mexico Corrections Department has made changes to the family visit policy, and some of those changes include the elimination of overnight family visits. The changes are effective May 1.
Instead, visitors will be allowed to visit inmates more frequently as part of seminar days, which will include parenting and finance classes.
Only about 7,000 New Mexico inmates qualified for overnight family stays. New Mexico is one of four states that still allow conjugal visits.
