New look at the new ballpark

El Paso city engineer Alan Shubert is rolling out fresh drawings that give a better idea what the new downtown baseball stadium will look like.

Shubert says he's pleased that the stadium designer observed one key request: give El Paso a stadium that is faithful to the city's historical architecture, such as the Union Depot train station, and its newer counterpart, Union Plaza. The new stadium design delivers those elements, as well as some lines that echo the historic Kress Building downtown.

With the conceptual drawings taking more specific shape, Shubert says it's now a matter of building the ballpark within budget restrictions. "It's like building a house", he says. "You design the house you want, and then build the house you can afford."
