Neighbors Rescue Horses During Overnight Hay Fire
Students Seek Help Raising Money For Damages
LAS CRUCES — Firefighters are investigating an overnight hay fire at the NMSU Horse Farm at 401 W. Union.
The bales of hay were stacked under a large awning when they caught fire Wednesday night.
Neighbors rushed in to help wrangle the horses on the farm. One neighbor we spoke with said the animals were soaked in sweat and were terrified. The horses were not injured.
Damages are estimated at about $5,000.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire, but a neighbor said that hay bales retain heat and can spontaneously ignite at any time.
A majority of the money that keeps the horse farm running, and pays for the hay, is raised by students. Now they'll have to raise some more money to pay for what was lost in the fire. To help them out, call the Animal Sciences Department at the University. That number is 575-646-2514.
