A man suspected of stabbing his best friend to death and stealing the victim's vehicle on Wednesday night, has been arrested and charged with murder.

Police said 27 year-old Israel Torrez is charged with an open count of murder, resisting or obstructing an officer, and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

According to investigators, the stabbing happened around 9pm at a home near Rosedale Drive and Hoagland in Las Cruces.

Today, one resident told NewsChannel 9 he was shocked this could have happened so close to his home.

"It's an older, retired kind of a community. It's just the kind of community you take a walk in. Late at night, doesn't make a difference. It's quiet, few dogs bark, that's about it. You just walk around and enjoy the cool air and it's just quiet. Until last night," said Tim Long.

Police said they found 30-year old Ramon Robledo on the sidewalk, bleeding from multiple stab wounds to his torso, neck and arms.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, Torrez and Robledo got into a fight, that got out of hand, inside Robledo's vehicle - and that's where the stabbing happened.

Residents in that neighborhood told investigators they called 911 after hearing screams for help and finding Robledo on the sidewalk.

Torrez was arrested after a black Buick Rainier was seen tail-gating another vehicle on the 1300 block of North Mesquite Street.

Torrez and the front seats of the Rainier were covered in blood, according to police.

Detectives continue their investigation and are still looking for the murder weapon.

Torrez has been booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center with a bond set at $1 million.
