Music Under The Stars Kicks Off

Folks in The Borderland enjoyed the summer kick-off of Music Under the Stars at Chamizal National Memorial Park.
Event coordinators are hoping for a better turnout this year after attendance declined last summer when they banned alcohol from the concert.

It's said to be a sort of a compromise. Before last year's alcohol ban, people could bring their own beer into the park. This year they can drink beer, but they have to buy it from a vendor.

Coconuts Bar and Grill was hired to provide the beer and wine for this summer's concert series. The bar says they could have chosen to charge more money for their beverages.

"We're hoping people buy beer and they don't feel $3 dollars is a lot because for us it's not. I mean we could have sold it for more, but we don't want to do that,” said bartender Liz Bustamante.
Although beer is allowed to be purchased, there is still a limit.
"I mean they can go drink it and come back and get two more, but the limit is two beers or two wine margaritas per person per transaction,” said Bustamante.

Bustamante says that's not unreasonable.

"A lot of bars do that. They don't let you buy more than two. Other events do the same, so we are hoping people understand and they come out and enjoy a great evening,” said Bustamante.

New rules can create new problems. Some people say they don't want to wait in line every time they want a refill.

"I don't think it's really going to be fair because the lines going to be really long. People are going to be here forever and it's going to take too long, so it’s better if you can bring your own beer,” said El Pasoan Sandra Caldwell.

El Pasoan Juan Aguirre says he still misses the days when he could fill up his cooler with beer and not have to spend more money at the park.

"Even though some people don't drink, the majority do. You know, and that's some way to wind down and relax and just have fun,” said Aguirre.
