El Paso, TX (KTSM) — The murder trial for Michael Herrera, 29, is scheduled to begin Monday. Herrera is accused of killing his friend, Cesar Torres, 39, in July, 2009.
According to investigators, the two men were fighting inside Torres' apartment on Missouri Ave. in Downtown El Paso when Herrera allegedly beat, stabbed and ultimately killed Torres.
A witness said it was a neighbor who found Torres' body.
An autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner's Office determined Torres was stabbed to death. He also had several injuries consistent with the beating.
Investigators found Herrera's fingerprints at the scene and linked him to the murder. Neighbors at the scene said the two men were a couple.
Herrera was arrested days after the murder and has remained behind bars ever since.
If convicted, Herrera faces up to 99 years in prison.
