El Paso, TX (KTSM) — The Ysleta Independent School District has been awarded a five-year, $7.5 million grant known as Texas 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) that will fund afterschool programs at five of its Northeast-area schools this year.
The grant will provide about $1.5 million annually, contingent on federal funding, through the 2017-18 school year for afterschool programs at Desertaire, Dolphin Terrace, North Star and Parkland elementary schools, as well as Parkland Middle School.
These afterschool programs will begin Sept. 16 and run through the school year and into next summer.
The Texas 21st CCLC grant application process is always highly competitive.
This year, TEA officials received 153 grant applications and only 19 were awarded. YISD was one of only 11 school districts that received this grant funding this year.
“We are thrilled about being awarded the 21st CCLC Afterschool Centers on Education grant for our Northeast schools,” said Rita Lopez-Rodriguez, YISD’s executive director of Elementary Education.
