EL PASO - Despite the jump of motorcycle crashes this weekend, the number of motorcycle deaths is actually down.

Ivan Acosta is the Parts Manager at Edge Kawasaki in East El Paso. He also rides a bike, and usually finds out pretty quickly when a motorcyclist has been killed.

"Us being around motorcycles all the time, unfortunately we get to hear a lot of those accidents and we know most of those people," Acosta said.

Most of those people end up being close friends.

"A few of my friends have crashed, and a couple of them have passed away," he said.

Acosta doesn't want to see any more deaths, and neither does Edge Kawasaki. That's why they work with El Paso Police to hold a free motorcycle safety course every month. Bike Officer Eddie Holguin teaches it.

"We're having unusually warmer weather for November, almost December, so a lot of people who would normally be parking their motorcycles for the colder weather are still out riding at this time of year," Officer Holguin said.

With more motorcyclists on the road this year, you would think there would be a higher chance of someone getting hurt.

"A fender bender in a car isn't a fender bender on a motorcycle, usually it means, at minimum, some road rash," Officer Holguin said.

But surprisingly, Officer Holguin says the number of motorcycle deaths is down this year. The latest one from this weekend is the fourth since January.

"We wish we had none, but having four is a pretty low number because we've had up to 14 in El Paso in past years," Officer Holguin said.

Although police can't tell us why there have been fewer crashes, Acosta says classes like the one Officer Holguin teaches can only help.

"They show you what to look out for and what to do in certain scenarios, so you will avoid accidents if possible," Acosta said.

The class is offered every third Saturday of the month at Edge Kawasaki, and it's completely free.
