More New Mexico kids not being vaccinated
Albuquerque, NM (KTSM) — A troubling trend has New Mexico health officials concerned. Thousands of families are choosing not to vaccinate their children.
In 2011, 3,372 parents opted out of required school vaccines by receiving a religious belief exemption. That's up 194 percent from 1999 when 1148 families opted out.
New Mexico only permits exemptions for medical or religious reasons, although a recent health department study shows a majority of those families actually chose not to vaccinate their children because of philosophical reasons, which is not allowed.
