EL PASO - KickstArt Downtown is a new funding program. It's purpose is to bring life to downtown El Paso.
Bill Blaziek from the Convention and Visitors Bureau says these new events wont just attract El Pasoans.
"We'd like to enrich the life of El Pasoans. Bring attention to the downtown footprint, specifically to the new arts district and the new vitality of downtown and it'll lure El Pasoans but, it'll also lure visitors to El Paso," Blaziek said.
And bringing in out-of-towners makes sense because...
"20% of people who come to downtown events are from out of town," McGlynn said.
El Paso City Council approved the program today and Sean McGlynn from the Museums and Cultural Affairs Department says he wants downtown to always have hustle and bustle feel.
"A sense that there is always something taking place downtown. I think this is a step to do that. We're also exploring other possibilities including a full time Saturday morning arts market that the department would run," McGlynn said.
Now the goal is to put the spotlight on El Paso as a destination. Not just for the view, but for its activities.
"We're very likely to have a multitude of new events featuring emerging artists, great entertainment and all on the backdrop of downtown El Paso," Blaziek said.
Not only will there be more activity downtown, but these new events could bring in endless opportunities for the locals.
"it could bring new activity to downtown, a greater volume of tourism and with that comes additional jobs and opportunities for the city of El Paso," Blaziek said.
