Researchers say the number of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD has increased significantly over the past ten years.

The new study out of Kaiser Permanente looked at the medical records of over 800,000 ethnically diverse children living in Southern California.

Researchers found a 25% increase in ADHD cases from 2001 to 2010.

African American children saw the biggest increase, with a 70% spike. Cases among black girls went up 90%.

However, White children were most likely to be diagnosed.  Doctors said a heightened awareness of ADHD may have led to more screenings, and more children being treated.

Researchers also found children from more affluent homes were diagnosed more often.
