FORT BLISS — Emerald Ratuita brought her 3-year-old daughter Ahrya to Story Time at the Mickelsen Community Library for the first time June 17, and they plan to become regulars this summer.
“She likes reading and trying to learn words,” Ratuita said, and not only it help encourage Ahrya’s interest in reading, it is also free and in an air conditioned environment – a benefit she appreciates in El Paso this time of year.
In all, nearly 30 children attended the event, which included a reading of “Marley and the Kittens” by John Grogan and Richard Cowdrey and an activity that included coloring sheets with pictures related to the book.
Jamie Buckner, Mickelsen library technician, said the event takes place Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., and it is not only the children who enjoy the stories, but parents as well.
“Everybody enjoys a good story read by someone else,” Buckner said.
Sometimes, the children help hold the book or read to the other children, Buckner said.
Margaret Foat, 9, said she likes coming to Story Time because the books express ideas. “It helps us get into reading,” she said.
Trish Rhinehart said she brought her three children, ages 2, 6 and 9 to the event largely to get them out of the house and keep them busy, but also because they have consistently enjoyed it.
“The kids like to come and do the activities,” she said.
The library is located at 2 Sheridan Road, and the entrance is on the left side of the building, which also houses the Fort Bliss Noncommissioned Officer Academy.
