Happy holidays, good cheer and a lot of cold kicked off the 8K Holiday Run presented by Fort Bliss at Soto Physical Fitness Center as 194 runners braved the 30-degree temperature to run in Saturday’s race.

Early morning temperatures dipped below 40-degrees as Soldiers, families and friends dashed down the streets of East Fort Bliss on an 8K route (approximately five miles) finishing at Joshua W. Soto Physical Fitness Center.

“It was actually perfect temperature for running any distance, it’s a lot nicer than I expected and during the course it felt pretty good,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Mike Linenfelser, Company A, 123rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. “It’s great having family here and a couple of Soldiers from the platoon. It’s fun to get out for a little bit and have a good time.”

Laurel Farinacci, wife of Capt. Kyle Ferrarini, 75th Training Division, decorated a stroller with lights and garland so show her holiday spirit.

“You’ve got to have fun with it, it’s too cold outside not to,” said Farinacci.
There were many winners, but no matter how they placed, everyone was able to walk away with a hot drink, fresh fruit and a warm feeling of the holidays.

The next Fort Bliss Half Marathon is scheduled for Jan. 1. The run is open to all, including the El Paso community. Early registration ends Jan. 8 and costs $10 for active-duty Soldiers and $35 for all other runners.

Register in person at Mitchell W. Stout Physical Fitness Center, Soto PFC or online at active.com.
