LTC Garcia takes command of CAB’s ‘Flying Dragons’

Fort Bliss (U.S. Army) — The 1st Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, held a change of command ceremony Jan. 7 at Biggs Army Airfield.
Lt. Col. Glen E. Heape, commander of 1st Bn., 501st Avn. Regt., CAB, 1st AD, relinquished command to Lt. Col. R.J. Garcia.
Heape took command of the “Flying Dragons” at Fort Hood, Texas, in June 2011 and played a key role in the battalion’s movement to Fort Bliss. He also led the unit in the execution of two live-fire gunneries, a division-level Iron Focus Exercise, and multiple major training events – a rotation at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, Calif., and Operation JADED Thunder. Each training event helped to pave the way for a successful deployment to Southwest Asia.
Garcia comes to 1st Bn., 501st Avn. Regt., CAB, 1st AD, from 1st Armored Division Headquarters where he served as the division deputy G-3. Garcia served with: 4th “Guns Attack” Reconnaissance Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, during Operation Iraqi Freedom; 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood; and, Regional Command-North, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
