EL PASO — With the help of Fort Bliss' Sgt. Audie Murphy Club and the Partners in Education Program, children at Schuster Elementary School took part in a special kind of physical education class.
"Partners in Education is something we do here in El Paso with all the local elementary and middle schools. A unit sponsors a school and we go out and do different things such as playing sports with them, reading to students, all that kind of different stuff," said Sgt. Ashly Lawshea, 15th Sustainment Brigade, Sgt. Audie Murphy Club.
Third and fifth graders spent the afternoon shooting hoops, kicking the soccer ball, and throwing the football with Soldiers. Their hidden goal was to show the students how exercising can be both fun and helpful.
"To have you guys [the Soldiers] come out here and spend time and engage in this physical activity with them, show them how fun it is, how health and fitness can be fun, and I know it meant the world to me and my students," said Lalena Flores, Schuster Elementary Physical Education Teacher.
Even though exercise was the focus of the day, it was also a great opportunity for the children to see that Soldiers are regular people, too.
Lawshea said, "It's something different for them. They don't get to see Soldiers every day, necessarily, and having to come out and realize that we're human beings just like them, and play and hang out, it's something good for them."
