Highlander Brigade Soldiers surpass blood donation goals
Fort Bliss — Fort Bliss Soldiers are on a life-saving mission - to donate the most pints of blood on the post. The 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division Soldiers have given more than 400 pints of blood during the past five blood drives.
As of Tuesday, the Highlander Brigade had already surpassed their number of donations from the entire 2013 calendar year.
They are hoping to donate the most units of blood on Fort Bliss, creating some friendly competition they believe is well worth their time.
Capt. Joshua Simmons said, "This is a great blood program. The difference between this program and what's offered in the civilian sector is that the blood that we donate here goes directly to our injured Soldiers in Afghanistan and helps support our injured Soldiers here in the U.S."
In addition to the use of blood in combat zones, the donated blood is also used for patients at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and, on occasion, it is shipped to other military installations across the country.
