More than 20 Fort Bliss families received free school supplies for the start of the new school year during an event held at the Trading Post here, Aug 21.

Multi-colored backpacks, filled with various notebooks, pens, pencils and other learning materials, awaited the anxious children.

Although the event was organized in part by Soldiers and Family Readiness Groups, the majority of the items were donated by the El Paso Sun City Lions Club, who presented the school supplies to families in the Intelligence and Sustainment Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Armored Division.

The purpose of the giveaway was to help Soldiers in need and ensure their children have the best opportunity for a good education, said Sgt. Maj. Amelia Fisher, the lead coordinator for the event. It has been held for several years now, but this is the first time the charity focused specifically on a military unit.

“(The Lions Club) looks for ways to give back to our community,” said Fisher, the chief food management sergeant major for 1st AD. “This was a prime time to donate backpacks.”
While it may not seem like much to some, these supplies can make a huge difference to Soldiers and their families in a time of crisis, she added.

“It’s very helpful, especially having so many kids,” said Staff Sgt. Maggie Clayton, mother of three, commenting about the giveaway. “Buying school supplies and backpacks can be a lot, so I really appreciate the Lions Club doing this. It’s great for the morale of the unit.”

The El Paso Sun City Lions Club, which has many retired military members, holds many other charity events for the Fort Bliss and El Paso community to include giving eyeglasses to needy children, providing Seeing Eye dogs to the blind, sponsoring intramural sports and donating hospital supplies.
