Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Twitty took over as commanding general for Fort Bliss and the 1st Armored Division during a historic ceremony on Tuesday at Noel Parade Field.

Twitty, who has strong ties to El Paso and previously served here as a brigade commander and deputy commanding general, returns to Fort Bliss as former commanding general Maj. Gen. Sean B. MacFarland departs to take command of Fort Hood.

Prior to this third assignment at Fort Bliss, Twitty served as the Army's Deputy Chief of Staff at Fort Brag, N.C.

He told NewsChannel 9 he is "thrilled to be back in the Sun City" and plans to focus on "taking care of soldiers and their families" as well as maintaining "tough and realistic training."

"Fort Bliss is a great place to train soldiers [and] it's a great community to bring soldiers to," said Twitty.

"Fort Bliss has grown leaps and bounds, and we look forward to continued growth here."

Twitty will be the keynote speaker at Wednesday's State of the Military address held by the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce.
