Mexicans are being encouraged to hold the salt.

Mexicans love to put salt on everything from fruit to beer.  Some estimates show that Mexicans eat nearly three times the recommended daily amount of salt.

The average Mexican eats far more salt every day than the average American and that love of salt is reflected in the Mexican public's health.

Two-thirds of Mexican adults are considered overweight or obese while diabetes and high blood pressure have reached epidemic proportions.

Mexico City has launched the "Less Salt More Health" campaign. The goal is to convince restaurants to take salt shakers off their tables.

Government officials and the city's restaurants have signed an agreement to encourage restaurants to provide salt shakers only when a customer asks for it.

The program is voluntary but a restaurant industry trade group has urged members to comply.
