Mexican President Wants to Change Name of Country
Ciudad Juárez, Mexico — The Mexican United States. You may not know it, but that is the official name of the country to our south. However, outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon has proposed officially making the country name just "Mexico."
The country got its full name after it gained independence from Spain in the 1820's. It was a name inspired by the American Independence movement. But now, Calderon, who is leaving office in the next few days, says it's time to "retake the beauty and simplicity of our motherland's name: Mexico."
