Mexican photojournalist granted political asylum in the US
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — A photojournalist from the Mexican state of Veracruz has been granted political asylum in the United States.
31 year-old, Miguel Angel Lopez Solana, fled Veracruz in May of 2012 after his father, a noted columnist and author Miguel Angel Lopez Velasco, his wife and son were gunned down and killed inside their home.
The murder of Solana's father marked the beginning of an alarming series of murders of eight journalists in Veracruz.
This case marks the first time that the Mexico City based Committee to Protect Journalists assists a Mexican journalist in obtaining political asylum in the US.
His attorney, Carlos Spector, will release more details at a press conference, this afternoon.
