NORTHEAST EL PASO — Family and friends honored an El Paso teen who committed suicide almost two weeks ago, after his family says he was bullied for being gay.
16-year-old Brandon Elizares was an openly gay student at Andress High School.
In a letter Brandon left for his family before he took his life, he wrote that the bullying he received for being gay at his El Paso High School was too much to handle.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says gay youth in El Paso need to be aware of the support services that are available.
"If you don't educate the community, then we are never going to make it anywhere, but once we educate the community what bullying is, how to stop bullying. Efforts like the anti-bullying coalition, then hopefully we can start to see change,” said Daniel Rollings with the El Paso Sheriffs.
Brandon was born in Hawaii, and that is where his family will lay his body to rest.
