EL PASO - Mayor John Cook says he's in a financial jam, and he's asking for the public's help.

The mayor has launched a website, www.dotherightthingep.com, where he's soliciting donations to help him pay off legal fees to fight the recall effort against him.

He and city representatives Susie Byrd and Steve Ortega are also in the recall battle; the three leaders overturned a voter-approved ordinance last year, that stripped benefits from unmarried partners of city workers. Voters approved a ballot initiative to take those benefits away.

Mayor Cook is fighting to stay in office, and has racked up $310,000 in legal fees.

"I would like people to not only support me with their kind words and their compliments about my character, but also to support me while I'm trying to pay off the legal bills," said Mayor Cook in a press conference today.

Mayor Cook said he expects his constituents to help him, because he's come through for them before.

Meantime, Pastor Tom Brown, who's leading the recall effort against the mayor, tells Newschannel 9 that Mayor Cook wouldn't be in debt had he done the right thing and listened to the voters, who were exercising their constitutional rights.
