Mayor claims owners of Triple A Baseball Team had a plan long before stadium was announced

The group behind the Triple A Baseball stadium had a plan long before it became public knowledge, and didn't care what voters had to say, according to the City of El Paso's mayor. Mayor John Cook is speaking up days before he leaves office.

Like the banner says, the Triple A Baseball stadium is happening. Whether you like it or not. "It's something they probably could have planned better and found a better spot to make the stadium at," Latousha Davis, a Northeast El Paso resident told us.

Mayor John Cook says he has been and is still skeptical of the new stadium. "I don't think it's going to be the economic driver that everybody thinks it's going to be," Cook said.

Almost a year after the baseball stadium first appeared on City Council's agenda in June 2012, Cook is holding nothing back, talking about how the stadium came to be. The Mayor said the group behind the team, Mountainstar Sports Group, approached him almost a year before residents were made aware of the plan.

"The Mountainstar folks came and talked to me about the potential building a baseball stadium and identified a site they wanted," Cook explained.

That site, was right where that meeting with Mountainstar took place - where the old City Hall once stood.

The mayor thought they were going to ask voters for their approval. "Quite frankly I was surprised when they said don't worry about going to the voters... And they said, 'don't worry about it.," Cook said.

Even though he wasn't completely on board, Mayor Cook allowed the stadium to go through.

"The reason I didn't veto... because there was a majority of the people that tried to influence council's decision who were supportive of it," he said.

We contacted Mountain Star Sports Group about this story and they said they would get back to us.
