EL PASO - A massive fire in destroyed a vacant apartment complex in Downtown El Paso late Tuesday night.
The fire started around 11:30 pm in the complex at the intersection of Mesa at Montana.
Firefighters say there was heavy smoke and flames pouring from the upper floors of the four story building.
At first firefighters tried to attack the flames from inside. But the fire was just too big and they were forced to back out and fight it from the street. More than 2 dozen fire trucks were called out to help.
We're told El Paso Water Utilities was also called out to increase the water pressure in the area because fire crews needed more water. It took firefighters about 3 hours to get the fire under control.
Although it's a vacant building, witnesses say there were homeless people living inside.
Neighbors from two nearby apartment complexes were evacuated. The Red Cross and Sun Metro buses helped with temporary housing until neighbors got to go back home.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
