LAS CRUCES— Las Cruces police and U.S. Marshals Service deputies were led on a high speed chase through the city after a wanted man refused to pull over during a traffic stop.
LCPD said officers attempted to pull over Steven E. Valenzuela, 30, of Mesilla Park, on Picacho Ave. after officers spotted Valenzuela and Roseanne Holguin, 28, a passenger in the vehicle, driving a blue PT Cruiser. LCPD said Valenzuela began to pull over on west Picacho, but then drove off, leading police east on Picacho and south on Valley Dr. Police said Valenzuela was seen speeding and running several stop lights in an attempt to evade arrest.
Police said that one point during the pursuit, Valenzuela hit a curb and blew out a tire. The car's rim left noticeable marking on the roadway. LCPD called off the pursuit and followed the tracks from Valley Dr. east onto I-10, to the Mesquite exit and then to a residence on Yucca Rd.
Officers found Hoguin and as they began questioning her, they saw Valenzuela running through a nearby canal.
Valenzuela is charged with contempt of court and aggravated fleeing from an officer. Valenzuela is being held without the possibility of bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. Valenzuela had previously been incarcerated on a residential burglary charge and was released on furlough for medical treatment. Valenzuela failed to return to jail, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Holguin, meanwhile, has been charged with obstruction after she failed to provide officers with accurate or truthful information on Valenzuela's location.
