LCFD responded to two separate fires early Tuesday morning

Las Cruces firefighters responded to two fires early Tuesday morning.

LCPD was first called out to the 1900 block of Windsor Place around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday morning and discovered a home with flames coming out of the garage. Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire in about 20 minutes after arrival.

Three people were home at the time of the fire, one of whom was transported to UMC with non-life threatening injuries and the family dog was killed as a result of the fire. A LCPD firefighter also suffered a heat-related illness and was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

LCFD is still investigating the cause of the fire, and the exact dollar amount of damage has not yet been determined.

A second fire was reported approximately four miles away just before 11 a.m. at the Woodcrest apartments in the 2200 block of Entrada del Sol.

LCFD responded to this location discovered that a small fire had started inside an apartment but was already out thanks to an alert neighbor using a fire extinguisher.

Fire investigators determined that the fire started because of a small child playing with a lighter, a blanket was set on fire that spread to curtains on a sliding glass door. A neighbor heard calls for help and used a fire extinguisher recently installed by the apartment complex to snuff the flames and prevent the fire from spreading.

No injuries were reported at the apartment fire. No dollar value of the damage to the apartment has been determined.
