EL PASO - A 32-year old man who was lost in the Franklin Mountains for five days says he ate cactus to survive.

As we reported on Saturday, the man flagged down cars on Trans Mountain road for help. He had frostbite, was dehydrated and wasn't wearing shoes.

No one reported the man missing, so deputies find his story a little strange. They're still investigating.

Whenever I stood on a mountain I could see for miles, especially far enough to see the freeways.
How could anybody be that blind?

Have you hiked in those mountains?? They are not single ridge, but have layers of ridges that extend in a wide line. There are many canyons, intertwined ridges not unlike a maze. While at first one would think that you could just climb to the top of one of these ridges and have clear line of sight, often you do not. An inexperience person with no orientation skills could indeed become lost, and every years several do.
