Man charged with striking father, physically restraining children
Las Cruces — A Las Cruces man suspected of forcefully holding his children against their will and attempting to disarm a police officer Sunday morning has been arrested.
Thirty-three-year-old Jaime M. Arellano is charged with battery against a household member, false imprisonment, battery upon a peace officer, attempting to disarm a peace officer, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.
Las Cruces Police responded to a domestic-related incident in progress at 1925 Rentfrow Avenue Sunday morning. According to police, as officers arrived at the residence they heard calls for help from inside the home. The officer entered the home and found Arellano physically holding down his two children, ages 6 and 13. Police say, when the officer tried to pull Arellano off the children, the suspect began swinging and kicking at the officers. They add, Arellano then tried to pull the duty weapon out of one of the officer’s holster. Police say Arrellano had to be subdued using a taser two separate times.
LCPD Detectives learned that Arellano woke up Sunday morning and became belligerent with his own father after he learned that his children were getting ready to leave the residence with their grandfather. Detectives were told that Arellano struck his father and threatened the children before forcefully holding them against their will.
Arellano was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $50,000.
