Man charged in death of pedestrian near Franklin High School

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - El Paso Police have released the mugshot of the man charged with Intoxication Manslaughter after a crash that killed a man near Franklin High School Saturday night.

Jose Jesus Mendez, 27, of Santa Teresa has been charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Accident Involving Death.

Police say that Mendez was driving a Chevrolet Colorado west in the 7100 block of Westwind just before 9 p.m. Saturday night when he allegedly sped through a stop sign and traffic light before hitting a pedestrian who was crossing Redd Rd. near the Franklin High School parking lot.

The truck eventually stopped in the Franklin High Parking lot and Mendez allegedly attempted to run away from the scene. He was located by police a short time later.

There were two 17-year-old girls in Mendez's truck at the time of the crash. One of the girls sustained minor injuries and was taken to Las Palmas Medical Center for treatment.

Police have yet to release the name of the pedestrian who was killed in the crash.

Mendez was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center on bonds totaling $350,000. This is the 26th traffic related death of 2017 compared to 35 at this time last year.
