Man Charged With Attempted Murder of Former Friend
LAS CRUCES — A dispute between two former friends led to shots being fired Tuesday evening and the arrest of one man on a charge of attempted murder.
Jorge Montes, 27, was charged with attempted murder, possession of a controlled substance and tampering with evidence.
Las Cruces Police detectives learned that Montes and a former friend were engaged in a disagreement over a woman. The friend, later determined to be the victim, and Montes exchanged several heated text messages during the course of Tuesday evening.
Detectives learned that when the friend drove to Montes’ home at around 7 p.m. to settle the disagreement, Montes emerged from the house with a handgun and fired several shots at the victim who was still seated behind the wheel of his pickup. The victim sped away from the area while Montes continued to fire shots.
The victim was not struck by any rounds but his pickup was hit at least three times. No injuries were reported.
Montes also fled from his home prior to police arriving. Detectives determined that he discarded the handgun in some bushes near the Walmart store on Valley Drive.
Montes was located by Las Cruces Police officers and detained for questioning. A subsequent search of Montes’ home revealed several 9 mm rounds of ammunition and a small amount of heroin. The handgun Montes used was located near the Walmart store.
Montes was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
