Man charged after allegedly charging at officer with knife

LAS CRUCES — A Las Cruces man who was shot by police two weeks ago is now facing charges.
Officer Ricardo Porras shot 23-year-old Benna Belfedal twice. The first shot was in the arm and the other in the wrist when Belfedal came after the officer with a knife.
Police were called to the scene by Belfedal's sister. She said he was trespassing and refused to leave her home.
Belfedal suffered non-life threatening injuries and refused medical attention during his one week hospital stay.
He was charged with assault and battery on a peace officer for a separate incident last December.
Officer Porras was placed on leave, but has since returned to duty.
