Man brings suspicious package to gas station, police say it was a hoax
Around 6 o'clock this evening, police say a man walked into the store in a Valero gas station on Yarbrough and Gateway East, made a disparaging comment, and set a suspicious item on the counter.
Authorities say the package looked like a dynamite stick with a battery and wires attached to it.
The police department's bomb squad unit was called to the scene. Several streets in the area were immediately closed off to traffic as a precaution.
"We did come out here and as a result of any suspicious items we did call our bomb squad which arrived at the scene and as we continued our investigation, the individual that walked into the store was located and is currently detained as we continue on with our investigation," said Javier Sambrano, spokesperson for the El Paso Police Department.
The man's name has not yet been released. Police took him into custody and he is being charged with having a hoax device.
